For many years, I worked as a life coach in Victoria BC.

I helped people set goals, gain clarity, and move forward.

And it worked — up to a point.

But again and again, I noticed the same pattern:

smart, motivated, self-aware people were doing everything right… and still feeling stuck, anxious, exhausted, or overwhelmed.

That’s when I realized something important:

this wasn’t a mindset problem.

It was a nervous system problem.

This is where the real difference between a life coach and a transformational coach lives.

Why “Trying Harder” Often Doesn’t Work

What I see in my work now is this: many people aren’t blocked because they lack discipline, clarity, or motivation.

They’re blocked because their nervous system is stuck in survival mode.

When the body lives in fight, flight, or freeze:

  1. Focus becomes difficult
  2. Sleep is disrupted
  3. Anxiety increases
  4. Motivation disappears

In this state, the body prioritizes survival over growth.

And no amount of positive thinking or goal setting can override a system that doesn’t feel safe.

This is the moment where traditional life coaching often reaches its limits — and transformational work begins.

What is a Life CoacH
(and When It Works)

A Life Coach works primarily with the conscious mind, using a top-down approach (mind → behavior).

The focus is on:

  1. Goal setting and future planning
  2. Accountability and structure
  3. Mindset shifts and reframing
  4. Action steps and habit change

Life coaching is powerful when:

  1. Your nervous system is relatively regulated
  2. You have energy and emotional capacity
  3. The challenge is strategic, not physiological

In simple terms, life coaching helps you do better and move forward.

It focuses on doing — and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

When Goals Aren’t Enough

Many people know exactly what they want.
They’ve read the books, done the courses, worked with coaches.

Yet their body still feels tense.
Their mind still races at night.
Their system still feels overwhelmed.

This isn’t a lack of commitment.

It’s a sign that the body hasn’t caught up with the mind.

And this is where transformational coaching becomes essential.

The Key Difference: Change vs Transformation

Life Coaching supports behavioral and mindset change.
Transformational Coaching supports identity-level change.

Change often requires effort, discipline, and constant maintenance.
Transformation creates change as a byproduct.

When the nervous system feels safe and regulated, choices, habits, and results begin to shift naturally — without forcing.

Why Nervous System Regulation Creates Sustainable Success

When the nervous system is regulated:

Decision-making becomes clearer

Creativity and focus increase

Confidence feels embodied, not forced

Success and abundance feel safer to receive

This is why so many people experience breakthroughs through somatic practices — not because they tried harder, but because the body finally felt safe enough to expand.

What is a Transformational Coach (and When It Works)

A Transformational Coach works bottom-up (body → nervous system → mind), focusing on being, not just doing.

As a transformational coach, I don’t start by asking:

“What do you want to achieve?”

I start by asking:

“What state is your nervous system living in?”

Transformational coaching works at the level of:

  1. The body and the breath
  2. The subconscious
  3. Emotional regulation and resilience
  4. Identity, self-worth, and internal safety

When the nervous system shifts, identity shifts.

When identity shifts, behavior follows naturally.

This isn’t about fixing yourself.

It’s about creating internal safety, so growth becomes possible.

Where SOMA Breath Comes In

SOMA Breath completely changed how I understand transformation — both personally and professionally.

It’s not just breathwork.

It’s a nervous system regulation practice.

Through rhythmic breathing, breath retention, music, and visualization, SOMA Breath works directly with physiology:

  1. It shifts the body from stress mode into regulation
  2. It improves oxygen efficiency and CO₂ tolerance
  3. It supports neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to rewire itself
  4. It helps release stored stress and emotional tension from the body

When the breath changes, the nervous system changes.

When the nervous system changes, everything else follows.

This is why clarity, calm, confidence, and emotional release often arise without needing to analyze or “figure things out.”

The body does the work.

Which One Is Right for You?

Ask yourself:

Do I need clarity and direction, or deep inner change?

Am I trying to achieve something — or heal something?

Am I motivated but blocked, or exhausted and overwhelmed?

If you’re looking to optimize performance, life coaching may be the right tool.
If you’re ready to change from the inside out, transformational coaching — especially when combined with somatic practices like SOMA Breath — offers a deeper, more sustainable path.
